What Happened to Rock and Roll ?!
What Happened to Rock n
Roll?
by Adam Yorkshire
Rock and
Roll was a musical genre born from the ashes of American Blues. With its
popularity, came excess, sexual expression and ground-breaking cultural
revolutions that cemented the genre as the permanent enemy of parents all over
the world. Yet, today's Rock music seems to not only be best friends with most
parents. It has become completely irrelevant, repetitious, predictable, and
faked.
70-80s were
high times for rock Musicians, but now they are very few new rock Bands such as
QUEEN, RUSH, Pink Floyd, Boston and many more! You may be asking yourself
"Who killed Rock and Roll?" and the answer is a mixture of the fans,
the artists themselves and the record giants. Also, the more important question
is what happened to rock n roll?
Evolution of Rock Music
Rock and
Roll, to the dismay of many a frightened parent, was here to stay. The kids
became the focus of record company executives. The music does not only
introduce a new genre, but it also created a new culture. Self-expression
became the chant of a new generation and the new music was the vehicle for
their experimentation.
The 1960's
saw offshoots of the genre spring up. Folk-rock enjoyed notable popularity
during this time and the Beatles came on the scene with the British Invasion.
The 70's saw the full bloom of heavy metal and by the end of the decade,
America was deep into disco dance music. The 1980's saw the decline of disco
and the birth of punk music. The punk movement still today claims some die-hard
fans yet had short-lived popularity with the masses.
There would
be categories and sub-categories such as: soft rock, hard rock, pops rock and
classic-rock that would surface over the next 20 years. The fact remains that,
they are considered to be under the rock and roll umbrella because they possess
many elements of the original rock and roll style of the 1950's.
Modern Rock Music
The main
ingredients that define the Rock and Roll style music are the instruments
combined with the melodies. Guitar, piano and drums are the main instruments
found in rock music. Technology is believed by some to have reduced the true
essence of rock music. With so much of today's music being computerized, the
raw talent of a singer and or musician is said to no longer exist.
Over the
last 10 years, a revival of the pop style of rock music with vocals and a
microphone has taken place. The insurgence of talent shows like American Idol
has once again demanded talent from aspiring rock or pop artists. Contestants
are required to stand on their talent alone with only their voice and a
microphone. They can't depend on the manipulations of technology to give them
what only God can bestow.
It comes as
no surprise to see the success of modern rock bands slowly dissipating as the
general public gets their rock star fix from the veteran classic rock bands or
even rap. If Rock and Roll wants to make a comeback, it needs to go back to the
basics. The veteran bands are proof that there is still demand for rock music.
Only time will tell if the artists can fill that demand.
